Welcome to the games page - AUGUST

In this section we now present a novel feature: "Best Irish Games Ever Played". Here you will be able to offer your view and impressions, and of course nominate a game that is one of your favorite games played by an Irish player. After much consultation and consideration it was decided that instead of just submitting games that Colm alone, has considered to be the best ever Irish games played, it might be a lot more interesting to have Colm nominate a selection of three games each month to be voted on by visitors of the website. Then, depending on which game attracts the most interest and votes, this game will be annotated in great detail by the end of each month.

Hopefuly this will give people a chance to ask questions and or offer their views on particular games of interest. The criteria for selecting games used is a fairly broad one but does have some clear parameters relating to such things as: Standard of play, Originality, Strength of the players. Plus the usual considerations like attacking games or games with many brilliant themes and ideas executed. In other words, good quality games of good international standard.

Comments and questions are welcomed and make the whole idea much more interesting, so feel free to have a look at the games nominated and have your say about the games. In no particular order I will give some thoughts about the three games I have nominated.

Kelly - Hebden

In light of the recent crucial defeat of Brian by Mark in the last round of the recent 2007 Irish Open I thought it might be apt to include what I think is one of Brians best ever games. Mark is a well know expert in the Kingsindian, and indeed he had beaten Brian before in this opening, so it was no small thing to win in such style as he does in this game. There were of course mistakes made, but plenty of exciting play and creative ideas and themes too.

Daly - Smith

Although it might seem odd to give a game I lost here, the fact is that this game, though flawed, was one of the most exciting and creative I have ever played and, at the time it was played, attracted considerable attention. Being published in various magazines and newspapers, chess columns of the day. Looking back at it after such a long time allows for a fresh examination of what was a fascinating game. [Don't worry I will submit a win of mine in the future!].

Ryan - Monero

This game is interesting for the beautiful end of the game and the fact that despite having an awful tournament at the time Joe, when faced with a strong 2500 plus opponent, was able to raise his game and outplay such a strong player with some fine technique and composure. It looks perhaps technical but has a masterly feel to it in which patience and finesse abound. Show me the game Ryan - Moreno
