So to the tournament itself and the games! My tournament got off to a flying start in round 1 as I had no opponent and got a bye! This at least allowed me some chance to enjoy the great weather over the weekend and have a nice stroll down at the marina, with my ice cream cone of course! Meanwhle back at the tournament the eventual Jt winner of the tournament Joe Ryan was grinding out a win.

Be7 16.Kh1 h5! 17.Na4 Bxa4 18.bxa4 Rc4µ 19.Rb1 Qc6 20.Bb4 Bd8! The whole point - now with ideas like ...g5 or ...Bb6 in the air White is in big trouble 21.Rc1 Now I have a wide choice of good moves. Of course I can win a pawn in various ways, but I felt the simplest and safest policy was to go into a typical French endgame where Black has everything he dreams about in the French. I don't think White can hold this ending. 21...Rxc1 22.Qxc1 Qxc1 23.Rxc1 Kd7 Black has everything he could ask for in this endgame. 24.a5 g5! 25.Bc3 g4 26.Nd2 Bg5 27.Rc2 Bxd2 [27...Rc8 28.Nb3 Be7 looks quicker] 28.Rxd2 Rc8 29.Bb2 Rc4 30.g3 Kc6 The king marches up to finish things off 31.Kg2 Kb5 32.h3 gxh3+! [32...Kxa5 33.hxg4 hxg4 34.f3 gxf3+ 35.Kxf3 And with g4 coming next White is still fighting.] 33.Kxh3 Kxa5 34.g4? [34.f3 The only chance 34...Ka4 35.g4 hxg4+ 36.fxg4 Ne3 37.Kh4 Rc7 38.Rd3 (38.Kg5 Nc4) 38...Nc4 39.Rc3 a5 40.Kg5 b5 41.Kf6 b4 42.axb4 axb4 43.Rc1 Kb3 44.Ba1 Ka2-+] 34...hxg4+ 35.Kxg4 Ka4 36.Kg5 Kb3 37.Kf6 Rc7 38.Re2 b5 39.Rd2 a5 40.f4 b4 41.axb4 axb4 42.Rh2 Ne3 43.Re2 Nc2 44.f5 exf5 45.Bc1 Nxd4 46.Rd2 Rxc1 Anything else also wins 47.Rxd4 Rc7 48.Rh4 Kc3 49.Rh7 b3 50.Rxf7 Rxf7+ 0-1
That game was followed up by a more complex and tense game where Black sacs a piece in a sharp line of the classical Kingsindian (2) Ryan,J - Llorens,I [E97]
